If there was an era where i would have loved to live it would be in the 1920′s – seemingly endless wealth, shortened hemlines, sequins, feathers, jewels and did i mention…. parties?? I am in countdown mode until Baz Lurhman’s version of the F. Scott Fitzgerald masterpiece The Great Gatsby is released in Australia- check out the trailer http://thegreatgatsby.warnerbros.com The production budget was $100 million and on the opening weekend in the US the box office took in US$51 million so money wise Baz has delivered..the critics reviews have been mixed but who really cares what they think anyway?….With Miuccia Prada involved in the costume design can the movie be anything but great??

The Great Gatsby was one novel which i can actually remember reading at school – remember West Egg and East Egg? Jay Gatsby’s new money Vs Tom Buchanon’s old money…Gatsby’s unrequited love for Daisy..AND their respective houses! I have delved into the history and got a little diverted along the way so here is Paddo to Palmy’s version of everything Great about Gatsby and the Era in which he lived…

The Gatsby Mansion in the movie which has been digitally enhanced from…

St Patrick’s Seminary in Manly – they actually had to remove the Palm Trees then re plant them; they also built a fountain out the front – i did mention the budget was $100m

Tom and Daisy Buchanon’s house..

Buchanon’s house was based on Alva Vanderbilt Belmont’s house at Land’s End in Long Island (the house was sadly demolished in 2011)

Baz and Catherine Martin researched early 20th Century mansions including La Selva on the North Shore of Long Island

The two story La Selva stair case was replicated for the set of the movie as Gatsby’s foyer

Gatsby’s 2 story bedroom was influenced by the French designer Emile Jacques Ruhlmann who pioneered the Art Deco style – the walls were a nod to Philippe Stark’s lobby in the Delano in Miami

Gatsby’s ballroom complete with masses of orchids which requires hot houses to grow represent the absolute wealth that Gatsby had amassed (notice the similarity to the staircase from La Selva) The floors were custom milled to make the Gatsby monogram!

The less shiny interiors of the Buchanon house – the huge oval shaped rugs were designed by Catherine Martin through Designer Rugs

Classic Art Deco style in the sitting room of the Buchanon’s home featuring beautiful antique side boards and velvet chairs

Found these beauties on 1st Dibs – French Bergeres Andre Groult chairs..am becoming obsessed with velvet lately

1st Dibs also had this amazing French Parchment sideboard – i shiver to think how much this would cost (Parchment = Goatskin!)

Now for the Fashion..Fur anyone? and those jewels!!

One of Prada’s sketches for the film

Carey was shot by Mario Testino for US Vogue looking ammmmaazing in what appears to be a green velvet dress!!

Carey looking fabulous in Vogue..that dress is sheer decadence

Taking intricate beading to the next level – Mario is a genius – such beautiful photo’s..

Finally Carey in feathers…

Found this beaded flapper dress on 1st Dibs

Ok i am obsessed with 1st Dibs – seriously how beautiful is this Art Deco style Onyx and Diamond bracelet?!

Carved sapphire and diamond jabot pin – 1st Dibs – where else?!

Or these carved jade stunners? (1st Dibs) i actually have a pair of earrings like this my very gorgeous husband gave them to me (from Rox jewellers in the Strand Arcade)

And with all of this fabulous jewellery a girls need somewhere fabulous to keep it – shagreen and ivory box (yes you guessed it 1st dibs)

The fashion that Miuccia Prada drew from as inspiration for the costumes (from both Prada and Miu Miu)

Some fabulous 20′s inspired shoes from Tory Burch – they come in yellow as well!

Yellow!

The June issue of Madison is out (their final 100th issue) and am tickled pink that our Paddington house made it in to their Interiors section. I am desperate to get my hands on the images as they are beautiful but in the mean time i have gone down the old fashioned route and taken photo’s of the pages. I have to admit i didn’t realise just how colourful our house is – i really hope i haven’t gone over board!?

Now for our next adventure – we are off to Morocco and Barcelona next week (just have to get over Ella’s 6th birthday Bollywood themed party first!) so if anyone has any food, fashion or furniture tips for either of these Cities please let me know – would love to hear from you!!;)

The gorgeous Jessica Gomes is on the cover

Our dining room featuring our Tulip table with vintage Thonet chairs; our beautiful Alyson Reynolds moths painting, Restoration Hardware Belgium linen curtains and bronze pendant light from Manyara home in Newport

Me at the front door – just casually looking out to the street – as you do! Door colour is Porters ‘Moroccan yellow’; top right image is in our bedroom – antique dresser was a roadside find; hanging above it is a John Olsen frog print

Large image is of our sitting room – over dyed patchwork rug from Loom in Melbourne, Vintage yellow chairs are from PAD upholstered in Chistopher Farr fabric, the blue velvet retro chair was a budget buy from Opus in Paddington; pendant light is made from Coconut husks from Gia lighting; antique coffee table from John and Ginger; Art in other images is from Vietnam, Indonesia and George Raftopoulos (Sydney based Artist)

So need to get my hands on these images as these ones are too small for me to point out the details!

I am a mother of 2 girls (Ella 5 and Gisele 3) and wife to Michael; I am passionate about family, friends, food, furniture and fashion. As Carrie famously quoted in SAC 2 I have been cheating on fashion with furniture!

Reason being is that we recently started renovating our home in Paddington (as in knocking it down and rebuilding). Instead of renting we made the decision to move to our beach house in Palm Beach for the year. This blog will track amongst other things the renovation and reveal the many gorgeous suppliers that I have met up here and back in town.
