I was recently asked a question by a reader that has got me thinking...if i had have used an Interior Designer for Paddington who would I have used...to be honest i never entertained using an interior designer as i am so passionate about everything design but when i look at the work of Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke (from Arent & Pyke www.arentpyke.com) and Anna Spiro (from Black & Spiro www.blackandspiro.com.au) i am drooling with envy; these women are masters of colour, style and well... comfort. Just like fashion if a house looks good but is not comfortable or doesn't fit well you don't use the spaces or in the case of fashion wear it!

It's probably blogging blasphemy to do a combined post on both of these ridiculously talented Design Houses but theoretically i like different elements of their work; Anna Spiro is a little too traditional for me at times and Arent & Pyke can be a little too contemporary for me - i know that the client sets the tone and the brief for the project but in a design fantasy world i would love to see a collaboration between these two;) Here are some of my favourite examples of their work...both of them have also recently updated their websites with Arent & Pyke producing a great blog inoutdesignblog.com

The beautiful Anna Spiro is a Brisbane based Interior Designer; her homewares shop in Brisbane Black & Spiro has reached cult status (i am contemplating a trip to Brissy just to visit the shop!) it stocks the most amazing range of brightly coloured fabrics, cushions, vintage/antique furniture and other curios, Anna is standing in front of one of her wallpaper designs for Porters Paints..a 2nd range is about to be released

Another Anna Spiro wallpaper design for Porters - the range came in yellow, orange, green and pink (all signature brights); Anna is a big user of Vintage fabrics - the girls at Walter G help her source these from India..how are those pink and white pom pom cushions!!??

Brisbane based bar Mr & Mrs G - again such an original colour palette

Mr & Mrs G sitting area - looks so cosy and homely; Anna loves a picture filled wall - she has an amazing eye for artwork as well

More of Anna's wallpaper range - a typical blend of mixing tribal brights with the more traditional..love this artwork

This is Anna's own home in Brisbane - she has a gorgeous old Queenslander; white joinery and floors are her signature..and do you spot the moths by Allyson Reynolds which we also happen to own one of her works;) yes let's just say i am slightly obsessed with her style!

Our treasured moths by Allyson Reynolds in our Paddo dining room

Anna is also a Bromley fan

A perfect example of Anna's skill in fabric selection..she has the ability to make the old current

She is a big fan of stripes..(as am i!;)

Anna's dining table - she is not afraid to mix and match

Anna's living room..the white floors allows you to go as bright on the colour scheme as you desire

She is a big fan of built in shelving which allows you to beautifully display your treasures

Anna has a great eye for antiques as well - regularly trawling though Brisbane auction houses and antique yards; she also make regular overseas trips to NY to source unique one off pieces and fabrics for her shop and her clients

Her Black & Spiro shop in Brisbane is decorated to look like rooms of a house ( a similar concept to John and Ginger in Freshwater Sydney) Can you tell she loves a blue and white ginger jar?!

She has the most amazing lamp selection and is not afraid of using hot pink!

This pink couch is beyond beautiful - not so sure how the hubby would feel about this (my girls would love it though!)

Anna frequently goes with pattern on the curtains as well - something i have not been brave enough to do!

Now onto the Sydney based design duo Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke; they met whilst working together at Sarah Davison Interior Design and formed their own design house in 2007 out of their joint passion for 'balance' in interiors

A recent bedroom installation - they are big users of Christopher Farr fabric; this wall is actually upholstered in it (would not have been cheap!) Farr really needs to bring out a wallpaper range! recognise the fabric - my matching armchairs from PAD are done in the same fabric! You can immediately see their style is more minimal in its nature yet they are not afraid of colour but it is used in a more balanced way

Love this bedroom..such a dramatic yet soothing colour palette

In the same bedroom - such clever joinery another signature of theirs - bookshelf in the bedroom = genius

This room was featured in House & Garden's 50 most beautiful rooms of 2012; again such clever joinery with the extra wide built in concrete seating running outdoors gives the room continuity and consistency; the wooden ceilings and modernist styled furniture give it an updated retro feel

Love this bathroom - design wise they are very considered in their approach which provides a more minimal canvas; like this built in towel rack under the basin; yet their use of warmer materials like the wooden counter balance out the feel; they have also run the mirror right down to the floor to open up the space and provide more light

Another look at this bathroom - love the polished concrete floor; this wood panelling is also a signature of theirs which helps to provide warmth to what could be a minimal cold space

They also have the ability to go more traditional - this is a kitchen in a Balmoral house that they re decorated; loving this modern french style..the view is not bad either

Another kitchen of theirs - loving these mirrored butcher style tiles

This is Juliette Arent's Bondi apartment which i love - she has an amazing eye for art (her sister works at the Tim Olsen gallery!) Love this unique side table;)

A stunning Guy Maestri (2009 Archibold winner); i am waiting with baited breath for Guy to return to this lighter colour palette as he has currently gone all dark and stormy

A stunning upholstered chair in front of the Guy Maestri; Juliette is a fan of sisal too!

Juliette's dining room - that rug is beyond beautiful..looks like a vintage killim..i am going to go rug crazy in our upcoming trip to Morocco!

More of Juliette's beautiful Bondi apartment (images courtesy of thedesignfiles.com); she is not afraid of the stripe either!
